THEditions produces affordable and collectable limited edition artwork. THEditions sells affordable and collectable limited edition artwork. We release new photographs regularly (once a week or so), find out when by friending us on Facebook, following us on Twitter, keeping up to date on our RSS ready blog, or via e-mail by creating an account with us.
THEditions was founded by Todd Forsgren (the 'T') and Honza Vojtek ('H') in 2010. Our goal is to show unique contemporary art at competitive and accessible prices. We strive to find emerging artists and work by established artists that fit into our quarterly themes.
All of our photographs are printed with care. Our prints meet high archival standards (which means they will last for at least 200 years if properly cared for). Each photo comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist as well as additional information about the image and the photographer.
From our base in Prague, we focus on artists who are from or work in Central Europe, but we ship art worldwide and occasionally show photos by artists from farther a field as well...
What is a “limited edition”?
A limited editions means that only a set number of each print is made. In our editions, each image is normally limited to about 100 photographs. The photograph is printed at several different sizes, ranging from our XS prints (on A4 size paper) to our XL prints (on A0 size), depending on what sizes suit the image and the media that the photograph was taken with.
How can I submit work to THEditions?
We’re always looking for new artists to work with.
Submitting work is easy: Simply send an e-mail to submit@theditions.com with a link to your website. If you don’t have a website, send us your CV and 5-10 photographs (note that we have a 2mb limit on our e-mail server, so size your photos appropriately).
Our focus is on photography from Central Europe, but we’re happy to look at images in other mediums and by artists from anywhere.
Why should I publish with THEditions?
At THEditions, we offer competitive gallery commission rates. We provide comprehensive service for scanning, editing and retouching your image during our proofing process. After you have approved of the proofs and signed our certificates of authenticity, we’ll take care of printing the edition, order fulfillment, and customer service. And we work hard to progressively promote our artists and their work.
If we select your work, we offer a full range of scanning, editing and retouching services. We’ll work with you through an extensive proofing process to make sure that your photograph looks great. These services as well as the first two artist’s proofs are provided free of charge.
Aside from printing to your standards, we also make our prints on museum quality archival materials. Using the final proof and our carefully calibrated printer, we will print the edition as it is ordered and ship the photos directly to customers and collectors.
We have extensive online promotions. We will feature your work on our website, our Facebook page, our RSS blog, our Twitter feed, and our e-mail newsletter. We are actively pursuing several media contacts as well, and plan to participate in art fairs throughout Central Europe and beyond. All this means that your photograph will be seen by lots of curators, collectors, artists, and others.
How do I get paid for my sales?
Sales are split on the standard gallery commission rate of 50/50. We assume all costs of promotion, proof printing, certificates of authenticity, archival mounts etc. while the price of printing is subtracted from your paycheck (our printing prices are at VERY competitive rates that won't exceed 15% of selling price by our contract). As your edition sells, we’ll send you paychecks.
At THEditions, we print photographs we’re confident in by artists we respect. We like paying artists for their work, and we never ask our artists to send us a check. Many of our editing services are free and we’re among the first to buy an print from each edition (for our own art collection).
We will never charge you for anything without asking you first. Those services you are charged for (such as printing the edition) are subtracted from your profits as your edition sells, not before!
Selected artists will receive a detailed explanation of our payment scheme and extensive additional information prior to signing a contract.
How are the photographs printed?
At this point, all of our editions are archival inkjet prints. We use Hahnemühle papers (we offer matte, luster, and glossy options) and printed by our Epson Stylus Pro 9900 printer with Epson Ultrachrome HDR inks. However, if our quality control standards and shipping guarantees can be met, we are open to other printing solutions.
Our prints are made to meet high archival standards. This means we use museum quality papers and pigment based inks. An ‘archival print’ means the photograph will last for a very long time. Our prints meet the standards similar to those of art museums and major collections.
All the materials we use have been tested by independent agencies with recognized standardized processes. Information on the test results is available upon request (info@theditions.com).
Will the photographs look like I intend?
We go through an extensive proofing process for each photograph, which is supervised by you. This can beginning with high resolution scans of your negatives or processing a raw file from your camera, though if you prefer you can also send us a file that you have already edited and retouched.
Once the file has been prepared, we print A4 sized artists proofs for your approval. The first two proofs are free of charge, and we will continue to fine-tune these colors, contrast, and tone until we have your approval to print the edition.
Our printer is carefully calibrated using ICC profiles and we closely compare each new photograph to the final artits’s proof to maintain consistent quality standards through the entire edition.
Why use certificates of authenticity?
Certificates of authenticity are what allow us to offer photographs that are both collectable and affordable. Using certificates has several advantages, for both you and for us, over having you sign the prints directly.
Upon your approval of the proof prints, you will sign an appropriate number of our certificates of authenticity. The final will be used to make certain that the entire edition is printed consistently. A certificate will be included with each photograph, and the print and certificate will have matching serial numbers.
One benefit of certificates is that they create a product that is not in direct competition with your own signed artist editions. This is why we can offer such affordable prices, as your signed editions can and should cost more than a THEdition.
Since our work is printed when it is ordered, the overhead costs are minimized. After printing the work can be shipped directly to the customer, minimizing handling time and meaning you don’t need to sign a new print every time one sells.
Limited editions are printed to protect the collectable nature of fine art prints. We limited the number of photographs printed in a THEdition, and we ask that our artists limit the number of photographs they print in their own editions as well.
We hope that you’ll still print your own editions. You can still print your own artist editions for exhibition and sale (and you maintain rights to the image, merely granting us the right to print a prearranged number of photographs). However, we ask two things: 1.) You produce these editions in known and limited numbers. And 2.) These editions are sold at a higher price than a THEdition print.
Are my files and photos secure?
After you send us your files, we quickly move them to locations on computers and hard drives that are password protected and not connected to the Internet. All proof prints and editioned prints are marked accordingly before they leave our printer’s studio. We take great precautions not to compromise your sensitive data.
